Summery Sangria

Summery SangriaSangria is one of those drinks that is just the perfect refreshment for the long, sweltering days of summer with it’s sweet, juicy flavour. The Rioja wine is excellent for this; the dry, rich flavour goes so well in a sangria. The cherry brandy makes it addictive. This may not be the healthiest recipe ever created, but it sure is delicious.

Ingredients:

1 bottle of Rioja wine (or red wine of your choice)
1/4 cup of cherry brandy
1 cup of fresh squeezed orange juice (or not from concentrate)
1/4 cup of sugar (I use organic raw cane sugar or agave syrup but any sweetener would work)
fruit of choice, such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, cherries, peaches, grapes, etc…

Remove the skin and pith from your citrus fruits (I find they can make the sangria bitter if it sits for longer than a couple of hours) and slice, then cut the slices into quarters. Place this citrus fruit in the bottom of a large pitcher. Add sugar and cherry brandy, and slightly mash with the fruit. Let stand until sugar has dissolved, stirring occasionally.

Add orange juice and wine and gently stir. Add other chopped/pitted fruit and stir. Serve over ice. Enjoy on a patio with some Spanish classical guitar music.
